Funny enough, I think I got the idea from reading that post of yours! I've been racking my brain trying to think where this whole thing started! Can you elaborate a little more on the retractable keychain thingie? I can't quite picture what you mean by that.
From the stores that I've polled, the most basic Camelbak is the least expensive option available and seems to have the best insulation and water delivery. I like your idea of strapping it to the backrest, though, hadn't thought of that! I wasn't sure how well wearing the thing for days on end would go over.
